ZAMFIRA  Monastery

Lipanesti commune, Zamfira village, Prahova county. Convent for nuns.
Dadication days: "The Lord's Ascension", 40 days after Easter and "Saint Nifon", 11 August.

The monastic establishment was founded by Archimandrite Eftimie, the abbot of the Ghighiu Monastery. The construction of the church, which was founded by Metropolitan Nifon, commenced in 1855.

The church was consecrated on 8th, September 1857 (dedication day: "Nativity of the Birthgiver of God"). The paintings inside the church were executed by Master Cheladec and by the famous painter Nicolae Grigorescu (when he has 18 years old) between 1856 and 1857.
The dedication day of the small church, which is situated in the cemetery, is "The Holy Trinity"; this small church was founded by Zamfira, the wife of a merchant whose name was Manoil Apostoli, in 1743.

The devastating earthquakes that struck Romania on 10th, November 1940 and on 4th, March 1977 inflicted considerable damage on the main church building. Consequently, extensive repairs and restoration were made first between 1941 and 1942 and after that between 1950 and 1960, under the earnest care of Patriarch Justinian. Another round of repairs and restoration took place between 1986 and 1989, subsequent to the 1986 earthquake, under the earnest care of Patriarch Teoctist.

On the occasion of the most recent restoration of the church, all the additional layers of paint that had been placed over the original paintings, which had been executed by the great Romanian painter Nicolae Grigorescu and which had badly distorted them, have been removed, so that now the masterpiece of our great painter can be admired in all its splendor.
The monastic establishment shelters a collection of liturgical objects of great patrimonial value. In the cemetery there were interred five members of the family of the historian Nicolae Iorga, as well as the renowned professor of religious music, Stefanache Popescu.
