ARNOTA Monastery - Costesti commune, Valcea county.
Arnota Monastery, convent for nuns, was founded by Matei Basarab
in 1634. Restored by Constantin Brancoveanu (1705-1706) and
then, in neo-gothic style under Barbu Stirbei (1852-1856).
Here there is the tomb of Matei Basarab and of the Mayor
Danciu, his father. Dedication day: “The Holy Archangels
Michael and Gabriel”, 8 November.
BISTRITA Monastery - Costesti commune, Bistrita village, Valcea county.
The Craiovesti brothers founded Bistrita Monastery, convent for
nuns, in 1492-1494. Torn down by Mihnea the Evil in 1509,
rebuild by Neagoe Basarab (1515-1519), restored by
Constantin Brincoveanu in 1684. Important typographic
center: the “Missal” of Macarie was printed here in 1508.
Destroyed by earthquakes and rebuild several times. Here we
find the relix of the Saint Grigorie Decapolitul. Dedication
day: “Assumption of the Virgin”, 15 August.
CORNETU Monastery - Calinesti village, Valcea county. Monastery for monks, founded by Mares
Bajescu, great village chief, and his wife, Maria, in 1666. Dedication day: "The
Beheading of Saint Ioan the Baptizer", 29 August.
- 5 km south of Calimanesti resort, Valcea county. Mircea
the Old, between 1386-1393, founded Cozia Monastery, convent
for monks. Restored under Neagoe Basarab in 1517 and in 1707
by Serban Cantacuzino, when the painting are also restored.
We can find here the tombs of Mircea the Old and of Teofana
the Monish, the mother of Mihai the Brave. Dedication day:
“The Holy Trinity”, the second day after Whitsuntide.
DINTR-UN LEMN Monastery - Francesti commune, Valcea county.
Convent for nuns, builds by Preda Brancoveanu between
1634-1635 and Matei Basarab 1635-1636. There are two
churches one of them made using only the trunk of one big
tree. Dedication day: “Birth of the Virgin” 8 September.
- Muiereasca commune, Valcea county. Saint Calinic Bishop of Ramnic founded Frasinei Monastery, convent
for monks, between 1860-1863. It is the only monastery that
kept the properties after the secularization and preserved
the way of life from Mount Athos (women are not allowed in
the monastery and they do not cook meat). Dedication days:
“St. Ioan’s the Baptized Birthday”, 7 January at the old
church and “Assumption of the Virgin”, 15 August at the new
church.
GOVORA Monastery - Govora village, Valcea county.
Convent for nuns, built partly by Vlad Tepes to the end of
the 14th centuries. Rebuild by Vlad the Monk, painted by Constantin Brancoveanu
in 1711. Here was printed the first Romanian book of law, "Pravila de la Govora",
in the printing house received by Matei Basarab from Petru Movila, the
Metropolitan of Kiev. Dedication day: "Assumption of the Virgin", 15 August.
HUREZI Monastery - Horezu town, Valcea county.
Constantin Brancoveanu (1697) founded Hurezi Monastery,
convent for nuns. It contains the center church, the palace,
the steeple, the hospital-church and some hermitages. There
are here relics of eleven martyrs. Dedication day: “The Holy
Emperor and Empress Constantin and Helena”, 21 May.
OSTROV Monastery - Calimanesti town, Valcea county.
Convent for nuns, founded by Neagoe Basarab, and his wife,
Despina Doamna, between 1520-1521. It is situated on an island in the middle of
the Olt. Dedication day: "Birth of the Virgin", 8 September.
PAHOMIE Skete - Barbatesti commune, Valcea county.
Convent for monks, founded by Pahomie the Hermit in 1684.
The church was ruined in 1871, abandoned in 1880, rebuilt in 1956 by the
Patriach Justinian Marina. Dedication day: "Prophet Elijah the Teshbite",
20 July.
SURPATELE Monastery - Francesti commune, Valcea county.
Convent for nuns, founded by Priest Francu's sons, Teodor
and Stanciu, at the beginning of the 16th century. Dedication day: "The Holy
Trinity", the second day after Whitsuntide.
TURNU Monastery - Calimanesti town, Valcea county.
Convent for monks, founded by Varlaam, Bishop of Ramnic, and
Metropolitan of Wallachia in 1676. Dedication day: "Entering the Church",
21 November.
